If it weren’t for Scarlett, I don’t know how I would’ve gotten through the past two days.

Work was a pain in the ass. People kept looking at me all sympathetic, the way they did back when Laurie passed away.

Heading over to Aiden’s for the BBQ, I glance at Scarlett, thankful for her quiet strength. The woman has become my sanity.

Stopping in front of the house, Aiden comes out while I walk around the front of the truck.

Stopping in front of me, he asks “How are you holdin’ up?” He gives me a look, the one that says I shouldn’t even try to fool him with the normal ‘I’m fine’ crap.

“It sucks. Feels like I failed the Ryan’s,” I say, and then shake my head, “But I’ll deal with it.” Taking Scarlett’s hand, I joke, “I’ve got my own personal psychologist.”

“Yeah, you do,” he says while placing his hand on my shoulder.

Damn, I need this day with my family after all the shit that’s happened. It will help ground me in this shit-storm my life has become.

We follow Aiden through the house, and out back where everyone’s gathering. I introduce Scarlett to my cousin, Cole and his fiancé, Birdie.

Someone places a hand on my shoulder, and I turn to see Alec. I feel some of the ever-present tension ease as I look at my friend.

His eyes lock on mine, asking the silent question whether I’m okay. I shake my head, trying to smile so he won’t worry too much.

After introducing Scarlett to Alec and Reece, we take a seat near the pool. Alec hands me a beer, and when I bring the bottle to my mouth and taste the water, I have to chuckle.

“I thought it would be better for you,” he says.

I let my eyes wander over my family and friends, wondering what the hell I did to deserve them all.

Scarlett gives my hand a squeeze, then says, “I’m gonna go talk to Emma. Will you be alright?”

“Sure. I’ll catch up with Alec.”

I watch her walk over to where Aiden and Emma are standing before I look at Alec.

“I’m gonna hug you in front of everyone if you keep lookin’ at me like that,” he warns.

“I’m so fuckin’ messed up I wouldn’t even stop you,” I joke.

We both laugh when Aiden sits down on the other side of me. He places his hand on my shoulder and takes a sip of his beer. “It’s good havin’ you here.”

Sitting between my best friend and brother, I feel a glimmer of happiness shining through the darkness.

My phone starts to ring, and knowing it’s Hank, I close my eyes as I pull it from my pocket. “Just gonna take this call,” I say, getting up and walking toward the house.

Putting the phone to my ear, I hear Hank’s harsh breaths. With every call, he’s becoming more hostile, and I fear he’s going to do something drastic, like coming after someone I love.

“How dare you spend time with your family, while mine’s rottin’ in the ground?”

“Hank.
